Image Magazine Subcommitee Chairman

A quick overview of the management structure of the Australian Photographic Society

The Management Team is a two tiered system of governance.

The Management Committee (MC) comprises 7 individuals with voting rights. All members of this MC team are encouraged to participate in full discussion in the general meetings.

The MC comprises of an Executive Committee - President, Senior Vice President, Junior Vice President and Immediate Past President. The other 3 positions are General Members. It is anticipated the General Members will have a portfolio.

The Society has 6 Divisions - Audio Visual, Contemporary, Digital, Nature and Youth. Each Division Chairman has automatic placement as an ED. The MC may constitute subcommittees at any time and may, at their discretion, give the Chairman of the Subcommittee a place on the ED.

Position of Image Magazine Subcommittee Chairman

This position will be responsible as Chair of the Image Subcommittee. It may be an MC or ED portfolio, at the discretion of the Management Committee.

Each member of the Australian Photographic Society receives each year six copies of Image, the APS bi-monthly magazine. Image contains news of the Society, illustrations of winning entries in national and international salons, photo comment, divisional news and articles to inspire and improve your photography. These will often contain entry forms for national exhibitions. The position is expected to be of an Editorial nature as well as compiling the magazine.

A full Policies and Procedures Manual is available to assist the applicant in this position. Additionally, support will be provided by the Management Team and Business Manager.

Primarily the applicant will need to:

  • Uphold the Constitution of the Society.
  • Strive to continually improve the organisation's policy, activities and administration.
  • Represent the Society to the outside world.

The applicant will be expected to:

  • Work in collaboration with the Image Subcommittee to achieve the following points.
  • Enjoy the independence of using his/her artistic flair and creativity to provide all members of the Society an informative, innovative and exciting magazine.
  • Be literate in the use of Adobe Indesign, Photoshop software and other design systems.
  • Be someone who has experience in graphic design and/or publishing, he/she will be encouraged to think creatively to produce new ideas.
  • Use a wide range of media including photography and computer aided design.
  • Produce accurate and high quality work.
  • Contribute ideas.
  • Be responsible for the editorial content of the magazine.
  • Fulfil writing, proof reading, research, fact checking and art production duties.
  • Delegate responsibilites to the Image Subcommittee to undertake editorial and/or art requirements.
  • Work well in a team, with printers, subcommittee members, general members, Management, the Web Manager and the Business Manager; liaise directly with the printers; liaise directly with Management, the Business Manager and Divisional Chairman.
  • Provide an annual budget to the Treasurer.
  • Actively seek articles and images for each issue of the magazine.
  • Actively seek advertising for the magazine in collaboration with the Marketing & Sponsorship Subcommittee, at all times looking at keeping the costs down.
  • Work to a deadline, 6 times per year.
  • Keep abreast of developments in IT (particulary design programs).
  • Be prepared to be considered as a member of the Management Team, therefore it will be expected for the applicant to participate in general meetings.
  • Have computer and internet access and be prepared to use it for communication between the Management Team (both email and web).

The applicant will be required to provide a Curriculum Vitae of recent works to assist in the application.
