APS offers its own Honours, and also recommends photographers for International Distinctions conferred by the lntemational Federation of Photographic Art (FIAP). Honours are awarded for photographic excellence as well as service to photography. Many APS members have achieved photographic Honours ranging from LAPS to MAPS and AFIAP to MFIAP. The APS Honours of LAPS (Licentiate of the APS) and AAPS (Associate of the APS) are available subject to the applicant having been a member of APS for at least one year as at the closing date of applications. You may start at either the LAPS or AAPS level.

The Society rewards its members who achieve excellence in photography. Members achieve different levels because of their motivation, exemplary service, desire to reach a goal, improve self esteem, recognition of their skill, artistry and ability. Recognition to APS members is given for skill in the form of Youth Licentiate (YLAPS), Licentiate (LAPS), Associate (AAPS), Fellow (FAPS), Masters (MAPS) and for the Certificate of Achievement (APS–CA) ratings. With the exception of the Certificate of Achievement and MAPS, the above Honours can be obtained in two different ways: by the accumulation of points based on the applicant's success in national or international exhibitions, or by the submission of a specified number of images for evaluation by a panel of senior Society members who hold high skill Honours.

APS also administers and accept submissions for FIAP Distinctions.

Certificates of Achievement can be obtained only by exhibition success.

The Australian Photographic Society Inc is a member of the Federation Internationale de l'Art Photographique (FIAP), the world body for amateur photographic organizations. The Society has been honoured to administer the processing of any submissions that may require recommendations to the world body. The Society, accepts submissions from all Australian residents, whether members of APS or non members. The submissions are sent by APS to FIAP for final decision.
