Honours for Photographic Achievement through the Exhibition System

formerly the  AEA1 

(PRINTS, SLIDES, PROJECTED IMAGES AND DIGITAL IMAGES)

General
Honours are granted according to the results obtained in exhibitions.  Requirements below, detail which exhibitions are allowed, and the varying requirements in terms of numbers of acceptances, different titles, and in some cases awards, for each of the Honours.

There is no time limit to satisfying these Requirements on the acquisition of acceptances or awards

Exhibitions:  To be eligible for Honours, National Exhibitions must have approval from APS and Internationals Exhibitions must have approval from at least one of the following bodies:

• APS – Australian Photographic Society
• FIAP – The International Federation of Photographic Art
• RPS – Royal Photographic Society
• PSA – Photographic Society of America
• PSNZ – Photographic Society of New Zealand
• UPI – United Photographers International
• GPU – Global Photographers Union

These Exhibitions are known as Approved Exhibitions.  For Australian Nationals, where APS has given approval, this should be quoted. For all Internationals, the FIAP number or the PSA number (if not approved by FIAP) or if not approved by FIAP or PSA the other organisation’s approval number must be quoted (e.g. RPS, PSNZ etc.).  Both FIAP and PSA maintain historical listings of approvals on their websites. Where an exhibition has approval from one of the international exhibitions listed above, acceptances can be counted from only those sections of the exhibition that have approval/recognition.

Acceptances in Trans Tasman, 4 Nations, Allied Camera Clubs, Australian Interstate Photographic competitions or a limited section of an APS National Exhibition are NOT eligible. NOTE: Acceptances from 2015 & 2016 4 Nations exhibitions are eligible. Any exhibition that has an APS approval number is eligible. If an exhibition shows Australia as the country but does not have an Australian Approval number, those acceptances and awards cannot be counted for Australian acceptances and awards.

From 2000 onwards, acceptances and awards in sections of National Exhibitions which are not available to all entrants (e.g. novice or local) may not be counted.

Titles/Works:  The pictures used in these submissions and identified by different titles must be significantly different.  Each picture should be identified by only one title, which should remain constant for its exhibition history.  So once an image has been accepted in a FIAP, PSA or APS approved exhibition it may not be retitled. If it is found that this requirement has not been complied with, the Honour so obtained may be withdrawn. NOTE: APS follows FIAP guidelines that a monochrome version of a coloured image is NOT a different image.

Awards:  Awards are defined as 1st, 2nd, and 3rd Placings, Trophies, Medals, Diplomas, Ribbons, Judge’s Choice, Honourable Mentions, Certificates of Merit, or Highly Commended.

LICENTIATESHIP (LAPS) - BLUE Badge

Requirements - This Honour is intended to permit the advanced club photographer of reasonable proficiency to obtain recognition for their efforts. The applicant must:

• must be an APS Member, with a joining date prior to submitting the application for LAPS.
• have obtained 50 Acceptances that meet the following condition:
• there must be at least 5 Acceptances from APS approved National or International Exhibitions.

No awards are required.

ASSOCIATESHIP (AAPS) - GREEN Badge

Requirements - This Honour is intended as a goal, offering a substantial challenge to the accomplished photographer.  The standards required are deliberately kept high but not so high as to preclude active Australian and Overseas photographers from applying.  The applicant must:

• must be an APS Member, with a joining date prior to submitting the application for AAPS.
• have obtained 100 Acceptances (which can include Acceptances gained for LAPS) that meet the following conditions:
• at least 10 Acceptances from APS approved National or International Exhibitions, and
• 5 different titles, which have received at least one award (as defined above).
  No more than 2 Awards are claimable from any one country other than Australia, which is unlimited.

FELLOWSHIP (FAPS) - RED Badge

Requirements - This Honour is for high achievement by an exhibitor established as a successful Exhibitor in International Exhibitions. There would be little value in a Fellowship based on anything lower than the outstanding international exhibition record reasonably attainable by our top exhibition photographers. The applicant must:

• have been an APS Member for at least one year immediately prior to applying for FAPS;
• have obtained 200 Acceptances in International exhibitions (which can include Acceptances gained for LAPS or AAPS in International Exhibitions) that meet the following conditions:
• (i)at least 20 Acceptances from APS approved Australian International Exhibitions.
• (ii) 10 different titles, which have received at least one award (as defined above) from 5 different countries in International Exhibitions.

MASTER (MAPS) – ORANGE Badge

Requirements- This Honour is for the consistently successful international exhibitor who has built an extensive record of success in International Exhibitions.  It is intended for the top photographers who continue to exhibit at the highest level after having established their standing as an international exhibitor by gaining FAPS.  The applicant must:

1. have been an APS Member for at least one year immediately prior to applying for MAPS;
2. hold FAPS.
3. have obtained at least 300 new acceptances from International Exhibitions (with titles that have not previously been used for LAPS, AAPS, or FAPS, however, acceptances received prior to 1/1/2017 do not require new titles) that meet the following conditions:
   • Minimum of 30 Acceptances to be gained from APS approved Australian International Exhibitions;
   • 15 different titles, which have received at least one award (as defined above) from 7 different countries in International Exhibitions. The same title cannot be claimed for more than one country.

GRAND MASTER (GMAPS) – PLATINUM Badge

Requirements- This Honour is for the most outstanding international exhibitor who continues to successfully exhibit in International Exhibitions.  The Grand Master is an exhibitor who has reached the highest standing among exhibitors the world over and has the most extensive record of success.  The applicant must:

1. have been an APS Member for at least one year immediately prior to applying for GMAPS.
2. hold MAPS.
3. have obtained at least 300 new acceptances from International Exhibitions (with titles that have not previously been used for LAPS, AAPS, FAPS or MAPS, however, acceptances received prior to 1/1/2017 do not require new titles) that meet the following conditions:

• Minimum of 30 Acceptances to be gained from APS approved Australian International Exhibitions;
• 20 different titles, which have received at least one award (as defined above) from 9 different countries in International Exhibitions. The same title cannot be claimed for more than one country.

APS EXHIBITOR'S MEDAL (APSEM)

Requirements- The APS Exhibitor's Medal (APSEM) is an Honour intended to provide a challenge for the very highest level of APS Exhibitor.  This Honour is based on an outstanding record of exhibition achievement in at least 10 countries.

The applicant must:

1. have been an APS Member for at least one year immediately prior to applying for APSEM.
2. hold GMAPS.
3. have obtained at least 600 acceptances from APS approved International Exhibitions (with titles that have not previously been used for LAPS, AAPS, FAPS, MAPS or GMAPS) that meet the following conditions:

• at least 100 different titles.
• at least 60 acceptances from Australian International exhibitions approved by APS.
• at least 30 different titles, which have won an award. These awards must have been gained from at least 10 different countries. The same title cannot be claimed for more than one country.

APS EXHIBITOR'S MEDAL/bronze (APSEM/b)

The applicant must:

1. have been an APS Member for at least one year immediately prior to applying for APSEM/bronze
2. hold APSEM.
3. have obtained at least 100 acceptances from APS approved International Exhibitions (with titles that have not previously been used for LAPS, AAPS, FAPS, MAPS, GMAPS or APSEM) that meet the following conditions:

• at least 100 different titles
• at least 60 acceptances from Australian International exhibitions approved by APS.
• at least 40 different titles, which have won an award. These awards must have been gained from at least 10 different countries. The same title cannot be claimed for more than one country.

APS EXHIBITOR'S MEDAL/silver (APSEM/s)

The applicant must:

1. have been an APS Member for at least one year immediately prior to applying for APSEM/silver
2. hold APSEM/bronze.
3. have obtained at least 100 acceptances from APS approved International Exhibitions (with titles that have not previously been used for LAPS, AAPS, FAPS, MAPS, GMAPS, APSEM or APSEM/bronze) that meet the following conditions:

• at least 100 different titles
• at least 60 acceptances from Australian International exhibitions approved by APS.
• at least 50 different titles, which have won an award. These awards must have been gained from at least 10 different countries. The same title cannot be claimed for more than one country.

APS EXHIBITOR'S MEDAL/gold (APSEM/g)

The applicant must:

1. have been an APS Member for at least one year immediately prior to applying for APSEM/gold
2. hold APSEM/silver.
3. have obtained at least 100 acceptances from APS approved International Exhibitions (with titles that have not previously been used for LAPS, AAPS, FAPS, MAPS, GMAPS, APSEM, APSEM/bronze or APSEM/silver) that meet the following conditions:

• at least 100 different titles
• at least 60 acceptances from Australian International exhibitions approved by APS.

at least 60 different titles, which have won an award.  These awards must have been gained from at least 10 different countries. The same title cannot be claimed for more than one country.

Judging Credits

• 2 judging credits can be earned, per section that a member judges.
• National judging credits can only be used in LAPS & AAPS applications.
• International judging credits can be used at any honours level.
• Maximum of 5% of the acceptance requirement of an honours application can be judging credits.
• Judging credits can only be used once so where an applicant has claimed judging credits then a Retired Judging credits list be supplied with each future honours application. Unused judging credits can be used in subsequent honours applications.
• Judging Credits cannot be used to replace the requirement of Australian acceptances in the various Honours levels.
• The member must supply a copy of the relevant page in the catalogue, or other evidence, that shows which sections were judged.

Judging credits to be listed at the bottom of a member’s honours application form separate from other results.
